camp fire on The Lake. It was an evening of reminiscing about the past and, for me, noticing changes that have taken place since.
It was the same good ol' crew that I have known for about five years now, but we only really see each other at these annual cottage parties. It was amazing to notice how we've all seemed to enter into a new age/life category, most of us are now married or getting married and at one point in the evening we were all talking about mortgage rates! Quite a change from our crazy days and nights of carefree youth.
The cottage itself has changed too. As the family has grown, the cottage expanded with new rooms, another kitchen even, and a screened in patio. We always had to use the outhouse before because the indoor plumbing could not accommodate all the flushes of a big party, but now we could go inside. Which was just as well for me because the outhouse was always a bit creepy - lots of earwigs - despite the air fresheners, padded seat, and frog decorations.
The only thing that really hasn't changed much is the physical island. The grasses are still long habitat for all sorts of little creatures, the deer are still plentiful, and the rocks still lay in the marvellous sunsets.
