I am writing from the University of Agriculture in Cuba. On Tuesday there was a rally in Havana that Darek and I attended, dressed in red, with students from the University of Havana. While at the rally, waiting and waiting for the procession to begin as the students were to march at the end, we met some kids from the University of Saskatchewan. We ended up accompaning them back to their casa in the town of San Jose and have been going to school with them to learn about agricultral cooperatives here in Cuba, as well as many other farming interests. They are very hospitable and great fun! This morning we got up before dawn and hiked to the top of a nearby hill to see the sun rise. Itīs been a great time.
Since my last email we have not travelled farther than to this actually. Since we decided to attend the march we stayed in Havana with our Cuban friend Ramon. We learned a lot of Spanish and got to have a real experince of the native lifestyle. Ramon lives with his dad (a vollyball coach) and his gramma (an excellent cook). We did a lot of walking an made some intersting observations. This part of the city was much different than where our hotel was, in the centre by the water. As nice as it was though, Havana demands a lot of ones time, and it is so good to be out in the country with the fresh air and the birds and trees. Today I picked many beautiful flowers (bright pink, purple, while and yellow) they all smelled so good! I wore some in my hair and eventually pressed them all to take home with me.
