Phil and I are on first name basis.
He had just birdied the 18th hole to take the lead away from the rival Tiger Woods. It began innocently enough as he was walking down the causeway. I could see him coming in the distance focusing on his score card as he walked with his protective body guard. Fans lined
the narrow bridge to catch a glimpse of the famous golfers as they quickly passed by on their way to the clubhouse. Mickelson was a favorite, as he is ranked number two in the world, he had a large crowd following him throughout the day. I was standing at the end of the bridge, with a view of the 18th green. As he approached I had commisioned Al to take pictures, I wanted a good picture of Mickelson for my mom who is a huge fan of his. He was getting closer, Al was snapping pictures. And then it happened. "Phil," I said. He turned and smiled. "Would you mind signing my hat," I asked? he looked right at me, he took off his hat. He
paused, his eyes locked in on mine, his pace slowed, he turned. Still looking at me he smiled again. He said that he would be back, he had to sign his score card first. He was so close to me in conversation that I could see out of the corner of my eye the famous score card. With that he gave me a kind nod and turned back to his task at hand. We had a moment, the others around looked at me in awe. Al couldn't believe his eyes, he got the approaching smile, but as the conversation progressed he was so shocked that the camera was forgotten, but the golf channel caught it all. Two minutes later our conversation was on the jumbo tron. I talked to Phil Mickelson, me, in Shangahi, had a conversation with Phil. It was amazing! The whole day was amazing. We had a private driver pick us up from home to drive us, Greg, Mackenzie, Allison, Al and I into Shanghai. The drive is not a pretty one, dirty houses, factories and development for the hour and a half. We arrived in perfect time to see Woods, Moore, Watney, Gay, Kim and others warming up on the practice green. We watched from the second tee box for a while and then sat on the green of eight where we saw Ernie Els, Shane Lowry...It was a warm overcast day, perfect for watching golf at the beautiful SheShan Golf Club. I hope Phil wins tomorrow!!!!
PS. Phil did end up winning the tournament. Lois was happy!!!
