So after our exciting new years we decided to spend the first day of 2012 down at Stanley right along the beach. As we waited for the bus to pick us up, we saw civil rights protestors biked by, followed by police. People speaking out against their government? Yet another sign we were not in 'China' anymore!

We took the Big Bus tour along the green route which took us around Hong Kong Island and made its way to Stanley. It was such a sunny day which was nice for us both as it has been sometime since we had seen what sun looked like…lol.

The bus took us along the coastal area of Hong Kong which is filled with loads of expensive houses and hotels., and quite a bit of greenery. With the sun shining, and lush forest, it was hard to imagine that on the opposite side of this island was one of the most condensed cities in the world! We decided to hop of at the Stanley markets and have some lunch. It was filled with tons of tourists, who had probably thought the same thing as us.

After a bit of shopping (Rob bought a hoodie with headphones attached to it) and sun, we jumped back on the bus to our next destination, a ride in a traditional boat used by a local minority group for centuries to fish. The ride came with the tour, otherwise I wouldn’t really recommend it, as you just ride around in a small harbor between docked boats. With that said, we did get to see how the locals lived on the boats, and it was nice to be on the water.

Later on that night we decided to head to the ladies market (which also sells men’s stuff ;). The place was packed with people and all the roads around seemed to all be selling the same stuff (i.e. one road was clothes, the other was electronics’, another sold pets….etc). With all the flashing neon lights it was quite a sight!
