I've seen lots of deer in my time in the various woods. Well, there's lots of deer out at Radnor Lake. Back when I used to volunteer there, the ranger, Randy, told me about how they had put some tracking devices on a family of deer, and discovered that on most nights, they crossed I-65 to some feeding or watering hole. That's 6 lanes of interstate very near to an urban center, that these deer crossed every night.

At any rate, in my recent hikes at Radnor, I've seen lots of deer. They're pretty non-skittish, so you end up getting very close to them - within about 5 feet on a couple occasions. But think about it. I've seen deer standing, deer grazing, or gazing pensively into the distance, deer running, jumping, etc. But until yesterday, I had never once seen a deer sitting down. Have you? The deer was just hanging out (that's for Jill) right there on the forest floor, and as I approached, kinda swivelled his hips to stand up, and walked a little bit away from the trail. It was pretty cool, actually, and unexpected.

This reminds me of my beloved Daphne (the intrepidest of cats). The last place we lived in Michigan was an apartment complex that bordered some woods. Daphne would often spend her entire day out in the woods. When you came home from work, you could be walking along the back path, yell out "Daphne" and then you'd hear this rustling way back in the woods, and about 10 seconds later her black and white body would come bounding out of the woods into the path. So, thinking about how much time she spent back there, and also knowing that cats sleep an average of 18 hours a day, well, do the math. You figure that at some point she must have curled her little body up in a pile of leaves and took a cat nap. This is the kind of thing we never get to see, but how cute would that have been?
