We woke up to the jagged Grand Tetons towering over us and the bright sun shining down on us. The day held so much bright potential from the start and it did not disappoint.
After the obligatory visitor center stops to learn about the area, we did a great ~ 5 mile hike from String Lake to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point above Jenny Lake. We saw tons of wildlife on the hike. We saw about 6 marmots (cute, furry animals that look kind of like beavers). Some of them were shy, but others seemed to really enjoy posing for pictures. They showed off their most photogenic sides as they investigated us investigating them. We saw a large bull moose about 30 feet above the trail peacefully chomping on some grass. On the way back, an hour or two later, he was in almost the exact same spot, still eating. We also pretty much stumbled upon a dead elk just off the trail.
Along the entire hike, and especially at Inspiration Point, Lew and his dad were kept busy trying to identify a multitude of birds, including:
- western taninger
- American dipper
- mountain bluebird
- Swainson's thrush
- yellow rumped warbler
- chipping sparrow
- western meadowlark
- brown-headed cowbird
At Inspiration Point, the view stretched out across Jenny Lake and over a seemingly endless expanse of rolling green punctuated occasionally by clusters of snow-capped peaks. It was beautiful and awe-inspiring.
