Wow, so it's been a while. A lot has happened these past few weeks. I'm feeling comfortable living here now. I've been through my culture shock phase, for the most part. I just got really tired of eating rice and chicken gizado every meal, and the inefficiency that's rampant here is still slightly frustrating. (I've been trying to get access the the pool for about a month and a half now.) I solved my problem by eating out more and telling my host mom how much I love scrambled eggs.
I've made a few Dominican friends as well. There's a bar in my residencia where we hang out all of the time, and my housemate and I made friends with the guys that run it and the bartender. (I was actually dating one of them for a brief period of time.) It's a nice bar, and a very convenient place to hang out.
I was in the hospital last week; a private one that was pretty much a hotel with an IV. It was nice. I had a UTI that spread to my kidneys and made them swell. I had a wicked fever. It was extremely unpleasant, but all better now!
We had an excursion to Jarabacoa and La Vega last two weekends ago. Jarabacoa is beautiful. We rode horses up to this waterfall and we went swimming in it. SO fun. My horse was pretty stubborn though and didn't want to move very much.

After that we went to La Vega for Carnaval. It was crazy. There are groups of people that represent different communities. They dress up as "lechones" in these really dramatic, crazy costumes and run around hitting people's butts with "viejigas." I was so paranoid about getting hit when I got there. My two friends and I were a little over paranoid. (Blonde hair and light skin makes you a target.) I also saw my friend's  bruises from the weekend before, and didn't want similar ones. We only stayed for a couple of hours, but I'd like to go back this weekend.

Last Sunday we went to Carnaval here in Santiago. It was fun because we didn't have to worry about getting hit, just about getting confetti thrown in our faces. (I got a mouthful and a couple of times it got stuck in my eye.) They have lechones with whips in some cities, including Santiago. (They don't hit spectators, except in San Pedro.)
This weekend I think we're going to a friend's house in Salsero, which I think might be near Cabarete. I want to go to La Vega on Sunday though... dunno if that'll happen now. Independence Day is coming up Wednesday. It's a huge deal. It's like a big party all over the country.
Anyway, I gotta run, I'll try to write again soon!

Aw..
Too bad you had to go to the hospital. I'm glad you're feeling better now, and that you had lots of fun at Carnaval!
