I suppose I can only attribute my lack of updating my travelogue to my new found "island time." Everything here runs on this system, if you can even call it a system, of absolute relaxation. I've always considered myself somewhat laid back, go with the flow, but I've come to discover that I'm not, not at all. I like structure and a system that functions efficiently. I've had to deal with teachers not showing up to class, lack of materials available in the library, books weren't ordered for the bookstore... Jill, you would die. But, I'm learning to deal with it. I'm slowly adjusting to realizing that life doesn't need to be so rigid, the world won't end if your meeting starts 30 minutes late. Life goes on and it's still just as sweet.

The people here are interesting to say the least. I've now survived my 'initiation week,' aka the week from hell. It's called freshers' week here. The "most illustrious super seniors" get to drive all the new students insane with grub line meetings from 9pm-12am, then again from 3am-6am. Those of you who know my sleeping habits know that I do NOT like to be woken up once I go down. Waking up on a regular basis to pots and pans at 3am was not my cup of tea. But, I suppose I did something right because at the end of the week I was awarded "most enthusiastic." Don't ask me why. I just went with it and had a good time because I knew I didn't have any other option. My name was freshette Snickers. The explanation is "hungry? why wait?" ... it's a sexual connotation. My mom's response was "this must be stupid, because I don't get it" -- if you don't get it, just let it go. Save yourself. But that's over now and school has begun.

My classes are going well. In fact, I love them (granted when the teacher shows up). One of my favorite classes, Human Ecology and Conservation, only meets every other week. So every other week I don't have class wednesday or friday, and thursday I only have class from 10 to 11. It's not too shabby of a system.

I also found out last night that I am going to be our hall's queen in the Unity Week Competition. Meaning that I'll be modeling formal and casual wear in addition to answering a question about current event and/or political topics (I'm looking forward to pissing people off with this one -- I hope they ask me about my opinions on gay marriage, they're super homophobic here). I'm also going to have to perform a talent. A TALENT! What the hell am I going to do? I'm an athlete, I can't go up there and row for them. I think what I'll do is a poetry reading or just a speech about creating an international community. Use my brain as a talent as opposed to embarrassing myself with my lack of dance skills and admitting that I'm tone deaf to hundreds of people. I'll definitely let you know how it goes, but right now I'm a little nervous to say the least.

I hope you're all doing well. I miss home a lot. Oh, I got a phone so if you want to text message me my number is: 1-246-259-7856. Hope to hear from you soon. Love you all!!

Best,
Elisabeth

Your Topic
Elisabeth: I am sure it will come very easy to you to piss people off when they ask you your opinion. Just kidding :)

Glad you are having a good time.

Love,
Dad
