Although not in my original itinerary, this town came highly recommended, and as a convenient stop over, it was well worth the visit. Right on the banks of the Tigris river, the Town of under 3000 people is made up of Arabs, Turkish and Kurdish people. It is home to a ruined 14th century fortress, mosque, caves where the people of this town used to live, a ruined bridge. A gorgeous tomb of the son of a previous ruler with blue mosaic tiling sits peacefully in a field just north of the town. Plans to construct a tomb further down the Tigris river means that in 7 years, this whole town will be under water, to be loved and admired no more! Such a pity and shame to lose such a gorgeous place...
This area of Turkey is quite close to the borders and with such a high population of Kurdish people, there has in recent times been tensýon and fighting. Today however, there is peace in the region, but the constant patrols by Jandarama and armed forces, tanks and helicopters overhead remind you just how on edge things are.
