The next morning before heading off we drove up to the lookout point over Cachi for some views of the valleys. We had to get going pretty early as we had to have the car back in Salta by 1 to avoid paying for another day. We were glad we'd decided to do the circuit the direction we did as if this day had been our first day there wouldn’t have been much to see and we would have had to fly by all the stuff we stopped at and saw on day 1. There was still some amazing scenery but more good for just driving through. We made it round in plenty of time to get the car back and asked the guy in the office if we could store the bags for a few hours as our bus wasn’t until 5.30. We headed off to see the mummies in the Museum of High Altitude Archaeology, which is as cool as it sounds. In 1999 3 incredibly well preserved child mummies from the Incan period were found at the top of a nearby Llullaillaco Volcano at 6700m. They were child sacrifices to the gods and would probably have been drugged to sleep before being left to die at the top of the mountain. The cold has kept them incredibly well preserved with skin and hair and clothes all in perfect condition. Only one is displayed at a time to help preserve them and although the museum is small all the info is interesting. It’s mad to see the gear and effort required to climb the mountain nowadays to perform the archaeology when you think what the people in the Incan times must have had. We headed back to Europcar to pick our bags and were glad we’d given ourselves a couple of hours before the bus as they guy had buggered off to the airport and locked up. When he did finally come back he then couldn’t get the key to work for about half an hour. Not mightily impressed!
