Cartagena (old town) is really pretty and it's a great place just to wander around and lose yourself in for a day amongst all the gorgeous buildings. We did attempt to visit a museum – first one since Cusco I think – but unfortunately none of the museums here have information in English, which would have made it a pointless experience for us, not to mention a waste of money.

We stayed in Gethsmane which wasn’t so pretty, although only because it hasn’t been restored, they have the buildings to make it as pretty as the walled part.  When we arrived after a day on a sweaty bus we were shown to our room (a sweat box with a fan) and then told where the bathrooms were….followed by "there’s no water in this area of the city at the moment".  Excuse me?!?  I asked a couple of times “what about the toilet” which got no response.   It had been off for a couple of days and the guy had no idea when it would come back!   Believe me, Cartagena is a hot and humid place and ignoring the already mentioned it is not the place you want to have no water because you need a shower!  Luckily for us the crisis was averted because the water came back at around midnight. Phew!!

We were a little naughty in Cartagena too and splashed out on a fancy dinner.  Partly because we thought the restaurant would be air-conditioned (!) and also we just wanted nice food! It’s coming up to us being away for a year and we thought we would celebrate in advance.  Knowing us we’ll probably celebrate again when we’ve actually been away for a year but for now we’re telling ourselves this is our one and only celebration so we don’t feel guilty for the splurge!!
