After our glacier experience we headed back into town and chilled with a coffee for a few hours! The weather cleared up as we drove to Fox Glacier Township and we got breath-taking views over the glaciers in that region. That night we stayed in one of the free DOC campsite and had fire on the beach with a few French and English people, which was entertaining "for the boys".
Having planned to get up early and maybe do a helihike, we ended up having a lazy day in Franz Josef. The weather was very cloudy and not great for viewing mountains and glaciers and we basically decided to do nothing! After a slow morning we drove to the glacier and did the short walk to the Terminal Face. From here you get an outstanding view of the bottom of the glacier, and an idea of the size as you follow the glacier path up the mountain with your eyes. We then followed the path up to the Sentinel Rock lookout. It's hard to imagine, but if you look at the pictures from this view and then consider that the glacier not too long ago actually came all the way up to Sentinel Rock you can see the loss of glaciers in recent times. It won’t be too long before we lose them completely, which is sad.
