After relaxing in Vientiane we decided to chill out some more and head south to the islands of Si Phan Don – the southern most tip of Laos. The 2 reasons to come here are to do nothing and to see the Irrawaddy Dolphin's that are in the area between December and May. So that’s what we did.

We chose to stay on Don Khon which is the quieter of the two islands.  Every single other person that arrived with us from Vientiane went to the busier Don Det and we felt a little sad watching everyone cramped onto their boat heading off there whilst just us two sat in a boat heading towards Don Khon.  Having said that it meant that we got a private boat tour of the Mekong for the same price they had paid to squeeze in together.  We found ourselves a little bungalow with a couple of hammocks outside and swung there for half a day before I got bored and had to go for a walk! We went to the west coast of the island to see the waterfalls which is a series of big and small drops like rapids along the Mekong.  Really impressive but not somewhere you’d like to take a swim.  After another half day of swinging in a hammock we walked a couple of km down the old French railway line to the south of the island and took a boat out near sunset to see the dolphins when they are apparently at their most active.  They are quite shy and you’ll never see them close up to a boat apparently, but they were very active and we saw a lot of dives and fins and tail splashes from a distance.  The quality of the photos is similar to those that we got of the tigers in Bandavargh for those of you that remember, but there are some posted anyway.
