Where I stayed
Lumbini Garden Lodge
As its only an hour from Sonauli we decided to pop over to Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, before heading on to Kathmandu. The exact spot of the birth is marked by a very old stone surrounded by a very modern and boring temple. But around this an absolutely enormous area has been turned into a kind of development area for Buddhism. 49 pretty large monasteries all from a different country have been built near the site of the birth. An enormous white peace pagoda, one of many around the world that have been built because a Japnese man named Fuji Guruji(!) thought they would be a good idea after the Hiroshima bomb, is also on the site. The sheer size of the whole park is pretty incredible and we spent a good few hours walking around it all. Lumbini town is a pretty unremarkable place but it was a nice and easy start to our time in Nepal.
