We arrived in Darwin a little worse for wear, having not slept in Bangkok the night before our flights to Australia and having not really slept on the flights as they were both short, with a short stop in Singapore. The first thing we did was bed down on the uncomfortable chairs near the departure gate for a couple of hours before we had to go and pick up our campervan.  We knew it was time for an internal cost adjustment when the taxi ride from the terminal to the rental area cost $20, about half our average daily budget over the last 6 months!

After we had the van we made our way into Darwin for a little bit of power-tourism.  We put 2 hours parking on the car and went to eat breakfast followed by a whizz round the LP walking tour of the city centre.  Darwin done, we headed off down the Stuart Highway for what is to be a mammoth drive through the centre of the country.  Before we got really on our way we stopped in a supermarket to shop for ingredients to make our own food.  I was sadly very excited about both the shopping and the prospect of cooking the food….!

For our first day we took it easy and only drove the 150 km to make it to Lichfield National Park before dark.  By the time we made it there it was raining quite heavily but as there was no one in the campsite the guy was nice enough to let us park under the cover of one of the cabins so that we had shelter to sit down to dinner.  Unfortunately the making of dinner was a painful experience given the high temperature and humidity – it's not fun to stand in a confined space cooking on a gas cooker in those conditions!
