Kakadu national park has had a very dry winter, but that all changed over Easter when some parts received over 3 metres, yes METRES of rain in 5 days!! It meant that many of the roads and car parks were under water and impassable. There was only one difficult area for us and we got through OK and we're rewarded with fantastic wetlands teeming with birds. We took a river cruise - well, it also included the usual car park!! Which was under 2 metres of water.......and the bird life was great but no crocodiles as all their usual "basking" places were flooded. Despite the heat we took a bush walk to see the escarpments, views and aboriginal art in the park......hard to imagine that they were crawn up to a 1000 years ago. We stayed at a great, quirky place on Friday night - a railway "resort" with cabins made to look a little like railway carriages and the reception and pub/restaurant, the station. Town population around 400, it was the centre of Friday night action with great food & atmosphere and members draws!! The pool was very welcome after another day of 34 degree temperatures.
We had a fab day yesterday in Lichfield national park, seeing magnetic termite mounds (aligned north to south to minimise heat by some internal compass!) and seeing fabulous falls (a benefit of the rain) and swimming in river and falls pools.....divine.
