We had an uneventful evening/night flight from Christchurch to Melbourne and we were in our air conditioned airport motel quite quickly. We picked up our campervan the following morning - the couple in front of us received a new one, and we had the oldest in the fleet!! We set off on one of the hottest days of the year and only drove a short distance to Geelong where we stocked up with provisions and found a camp site. The temperature reached 40 degrees!! We had a swim in the site pool; phew! but the van was hot despite some air conditioning and it was too noisy leave on for sleeping.......so we slept with the back doors and all the windows open.......the wee biting insects loved that!! thankfully the weather cooled overnight and was very pleasant for the rest of the week.

The great ocean road was spectacular; wonderful bays and dramatic coastlines; we found some good camp sites and went to a great sound and light show - set in 1869 we emigrated to Australia but were shipwrecked as we arrived; good fun! It was good to meet fellow campers and hear about their trips - most were Australians travelling around. We also travelled through the forest and went on a tree top walk; later we saw wild bush wallabies by the side of the road....we though at first they were the kangaroos.......but we then saw two groups of Kangaroos in fields on the plains. I was very excited to see my first wild Kangeroo but they were too shy to get a decent photo!

Adelaide was HEAVING is it was the last two days of their first ever festival and then St Patrick's day, which the locals and visitors celebrated with gusto!, but our site was right on the coast & on the bus route into town and the nearby village of Glenig, where the first free settlers landed when they arrived in Australia. We had a day sightseeing before cooking our steak on Aussie style on the camp BBQ.

We've handed our campervan back and are now on a flight to Brisbane where we pick up a car for a 2 week trip up the east coast to Port Douglas.

It sounds a wonderful trip. Brisbane we loved especially the South side ( near the Uni). Great shopping centre.
Enjoy, still some time to go. Geoff & Chris
