We had a fantastic day around the Hakone district; after a ride in the "romance car" train we found our " honkan" a traditional lodging house, and left our bags. Up a long flight of steep steps lay a wonderful tiny station ( see Ivan beside the sign) and boarded a " toy town" type train, which climbed and climbed via several small stations to over 550 metres.
We stopped off en route to seeing Mount Fuji at the open air sculpture park; it was fantastic, with some really great and unusual exhibits from a huge range of artists including Picasso and Henry Moore - there was a huge wooden structure and inside was a crocheted masterpiece, they even allowed children to climb inside!!
We reluctantly left gallery (we could have spent all day there) to continue our circuit by funicular, cable car, boat, bus and another train... reaching over 1000 metres and we were rewarded with some perfect views of mount fuji.
We decided to have coffee and cake before retuning to the Honkan, and I was quite pleased that we had........as much of dinner wasn't quite to my taste although what we had was great quality, the grilled squid tentacle had a strange taste - the dark beer was good though!! Just before dinner we had the private (inside) marble hot onsen (Hot tub), we had our own with our room .......but it was outside! and although the water was hot is was quite literally freezing outside- still the water came in useful for washing as our bathroom only had cold running water......but the loo had a heated seat; this is a country of contrasts!!
This was our one night in a traditional dwelling and so we had to get out our futons and make our beds - on the floor; a remarkably comfortable night but not one we need to keep repeating!

Off to Hiroshima on the bullet train in the morning...
