Travelled to Chiang Mai on the overnight express, slowest train we have ever been on. Could have walked faster, luckily we had an overnight sleeper. They have a party carriage and does it go off. Jammed packed, drinking, singing, shouting, smelly sweaty bodies. Gary was dying to join in but could not fit (in more ways than one). I think he has finally realised he is 60. Had to lie there and listen, torture!!
Chiang Mai is much bigger than I imagined and very lively. Streets full of night markets and the ladyboys are out in full cabaret costume.
We did a 2 day trek into the rainforest and spent the night in a remote hillside village. There were 3 english girls,4 spanish and 2 hunky guys from Germany, all extremely nice and were happy to engage with us. I was known as strong mumma and Gary- Pappa. It was very challenging over rough terrain through rice fields and over rivers all in the oppressive heat and humidity and occasional shower which only made things steamier. We slept in a makeshift dorm, in old sleeping bags with a rock for a pillow. The tour included an elephant trek and river rafting which was so much fun. Despite the harsh conditions we really enjoyed ourselves and we certainly gave the young ones a run for their money.
Yesterday we did a tour to the White Temple which was absolutely stunning, then off to The Golden Triangle where Thailand, Laos and Burma meet. We saw Dead Man's Zone where the heroine trafficking took place, now the poppies have been replaced with Casinos and tourism. Our last stop was to the long neck tribe and it was fascinating, how these people live in the 21 century and retain their tribal customs is something to see. Great day.
Back to Bangkok tonight on THAT train!!!!
