Spent the last three days in San Diego, what a change from Mexico. You drive 50klms and you feel like your are on a different planet. San Diego is so clean and well laid out. We spent the days on the very efficient metro visiting the old town where we did a free walking tour and discovered the very rich heritage of San Diego, the original inhabitants were the native indians, then the Spanish arrived in the 16th century. The Mexicans then gained their independence from Spain and so San Diego came under Mexican rule until America took control. It is quite the melting pot which makes it very interesting. It is also the home of major military bases, army, navy and marines.
Downtown is cool with many bars and restaurants and the harbour impressive with some of the biggest luxury boats we have ever seen. The aircraft carrier The Midway has its home in San Diego and we did a fantastic 3 hour tour, it was one of the best value and most interesting museums we have visited.
Last night we experienced our first taste of the thin walled room. The lovemaking next door went on all night long according to Gary. I was sleeping soundly thanks to my earplugs. Am not sure if Gary was envious or annoyed but he was happy to give me a detailed description including sound effects.
Today we drove along the Pacific Coast Highway through the lovely coastal villages of Solana Beach,Encinitas,Carlsbad, Laguna Beach,Newport Beach,Huntington Beach and Long Beach. Spending the next 3 days in the beautiful Santa Monica Beach.
23/02/2013: Beautiful weather in downtown Santa Monica. We drove along the coast to Malibu then spent the afternoon walking around Santa Monica. The beach was alive with people doing all number of activities. Some very fit bodies around here, they would rival Colorado for outdoor fittness. We feel so soft and flabby!!!!
Little did we know that we are in the midst of the Oscars. They were staging the Spirit awards on Santa Monica Beach and we got to see a few movie stars up close including Bruce Willis who came over and did a bow right in front of us. Laura Dern from Jurrasic Park was lovely and come over and signed pictures. We also got a wave from Helen Hunt and Bryan Cranston.
We also sold the car to the car dealership where we purchased it, did the rounds but they gave us the best price, a little over half of what we paid but well worth the money and we figure it would have cost us just as much, if not more to hire a car for 5 months. We clocked up 122.000 miles.
We then drove into West Hollywood and spent a very funny night with Robyn,Colin, Darren and Amy. Gary was in true form and had us in stitches with his bathroom stories and actions. We made so much noise the man in the adjoining banged on the door.

Have thouroughly enjoyed my weekly serial - Book 1 "Walkerbout - The Americas". Your reference and photos of history, doing a David Attenborough with nature and the descript landscape, plus experiences with new friends makes one almost believe we are in the back seat . Keep healthy and happy and look forward to Book 2 - "Walkerbout - Europe". bye Kerryx

Hi Liz & Garry,

I have loved reading the bog and looking at all the photos. I never knew where Baja was, I only knew of it through Chris Isacc songs. We went to Queensland for 5 days last week to take the boys to the theme parks. The weather was wild. All the sand has been stripped away and the beach's closed. Baja looks so calm after being up there. Our unit was right on the beach and the noise of the wind and waves made me glad to come home to the relative quite. Look forward to the next installment, you are doing a fantastic job as always. Love to you both,

Sue xx
