An interesting start to our stay in Memphis, pulled over by an extremely large African American Policeman as we drove down a one way street  the wrong way. Lights and siren blaring. He was very understanding and did not book us. We then stumbled across The Historic First Baptist Beale Choir performing their Christmas Concert.  They invited us into their church, we were the only whites in there and it was unreal.  I wanted to see an African American church service and this was the real thing, lots of singing, lots of praising the Lord, Amens and Hallelujahs. Lots of calling out and one lady had a spiritual experience and began slapping herself and going off. I wasn't sure if she was going to collapse, she didn't but came close. From there we headed to the famous Beale Street, a tacky mall full of dive bars and eating houses, but very interesting and managed to see a great blues band on a Sunday night.
Today we went to the famous and beautiful Peabody Hotel, they have 5 resident ducks who live on the roof and each day at 11am they are marched into the elevator and over a red carpet into the fountain. They stay here all day and then are marched back the same way. It has been happening since the 1930's after a resident bought some ducks back to the hotel as a practical joke. There is always a crowd and today we had the added bonus of a children's choir singing Christmas Carols.
Lunch was at Gus's Restaurant where southern fried chicken is the speciality and it was delicious with a nice cold beer.
