Hallo!

Its been a while since my last entry but dont worry I havent forgotten about you loyal readers. Things have been a bit hectic over the Christmas/New Years period so havent really had much of a chance to be off exploring.

Christmas was lots of fun spent at Sonia's Aunt and Uncles. There was lots of singing involved (ive become addicted to singstar....despite my lack of musical talent), drinking, and way too much eating. But hey I guess thats what Christmas is all about....having fun, celebrating with friends and as far as im concerned a little overindulging never hurt anyone!

New Years was spent at a Masquerade party which was loads of fun. I think half the fun was in the preparation for the night with all of us gathered at our house having drinks and getting ready for the masked event.

So far the new year has been great and heres hoping it is as full of change and excitement as 2007 was.

My first real adventure for this year was a quick 3 day trip to visit Aliena in Freiburg, Germany. She is over there working during her uni hols so what better excuse to go over seas than to catch up with a good friend who I havent seen in ages.

The flight over was good, in all honesty I slept for most of it (suprise, suprise) but of what I remember it went well. The airport I flew into was Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg which is also known as Europe Airport. Its located directly on the corner of Switzerland, Germany and France. It was a very odd feeling arriving in and having three texts from my mobile provider welcoming me to all three countries and still to this moment I dont actually know which country I arrived in.

I was greeted with blue skies and people wearing socks sandals and shorts....definately one way to tell I had arrived in continental Europe. I managed to navigate my way to Freiburg on the bus which only took an hour...I was so proud that I had managed to ask the driver if i was on the right bus and buy my tickets in German only to have him turn around and speak English....argh all that effort for nothing!

It was so good to see Aliena waiting for me at the Bus stop...just to see a familiar face from home felt like magic. As you can imagine we had loads to gossip about and we chatted away for ages like....well like two good friends that hadnt seen each other in months. It was brilliant!

We went back to Aliena's self contained little flat before heading back to the city centre for a bit of retail therapy...Aliena to buy pyjamas and me to head to the nearest Migros to buy Bratensauce, Aromat and Swiss Chocolate. After enjoying a meal at a little Italian restaurant we spent a quiet night in watching Ali on tv. So odd to hear Will Smith with a German voiceover...

The following morning we had plans to go to a fleamarket but with bad weather insight we decided to give it a miss and head to Stasbourg in France. It was only later we found out that the fleamarket was actually indoors...argh.

It was much to Aliena's amusement to see me taking photos of her speedometer as we zoomed along the autobahn....the lack of a speed limit seemed so novel. We arrived in Strasbourg in no time at all and spent the afternoon wondering around being tourists. We had croissants and pain au chocolat in a petit cafe and after my dissappointing croissant in Paris this most certainly met all my expectations.

Strasbourg was simply beautiful....tall buildings with window boxes and cobbled roads and still with handmade Christmas decorations everywhere. It just felt so French....I was in heaven.

After a few issues finding a petrol station we made our way to Alienas Aunt and Uncles in Achern where we were to stay the night. We attended a jewellery party her aunt was throwing much in the fashion of a tupperware party. For dinner we had a ploghmans tea much to my delight. I was in cured meat heaven having real bread and every type of salami, speck and ham possible....man it was good.

That night we went out with Alienas sister Inka and some of their friends to a Hip Hop/Drum n Bass club in the middle of nowehere. It looked to be an ex warehouse and was an incredible venue despite the lack of people there.

The following morning was spent recovering from the night before by sleeping, eating more cured meat, and zopf and playing dominoes with the family. It was great fun.

In a mad dash it was time time to drive back to Freiburg to pick up my stuff and head out to my bus ready to take me back to the Airport. My trip was far too short but it was so good to see Aliena and catch up...it was also good to awaken my taste buds and be surrounded by all things European. All I can say is that I cant wait to go back....

And so that brings me to the end of this entry..... so until next time Tschuss and take care!
