Jiquilillo is barely even a village, more a collection of tin roofed shacks held together with plastic bags and rusty boats lying on the beach. It`s beautiful and completely undeveloped, apart from a token 2 or 3 places to stay along the beach and a few surfers. While I was there the community was reeling from problems greatly magnified in a place this size. 5 fishermen had been missing at sea for the past 10 days and a couple of kids in ski masks and machetes had relieved a couple of female tourists of their wallets. Despite this though, the village was a great place to hang out for a few days, the hippy commune style hostel had an amazing library of books about everywhere in central america which did little but inspire me on to future travel, ugly but comfortable denim hammocks. My first foray into the world of surfing was led by a local adolescent who managed to teach me to stand up on the board (albeit for less than a second) after 3 days of attempts. Worldwide championships here I come! I could stay here for weeks, but the highland fling and cowboys are calling.....
