Iīd wanted to go to the Lucha libre for aaages, but my cousins had always refused to take me on the grounds the stadium was in a dangerous ghetto where the car was liable to get stolen and our persons a target for mugging/rape/murder. Pah, there was absolutely nothing to worry about, I found a couchsurfing girl who was organising an outing there for her friends last night in the city, and not only did we walk there from Colonia Cuahtemoc, but got a taxi back. Obviously on evenings when the streets werenīt filled with hyperactive lucha fans running round in masks and performing mock leg chops, it might be a different story.
I donīt know anything at all about Lucha Libre (Mexican Wrestling)- or any sport at all for that matter- so the fact that Mistico, the sportīs current superstar, was performing (playing? fighting?) was a bit lost on me. The guys in lighter coloured outfits are the goodies and apparently hurl their opponents out of the ring with greater finesse than the darker clad baddies. Whatever. Just hope the blood was fake. The atmosphere was brilliant though and nobody really notices if you cheer the wrong person. Finished off the night dancing to a weird mix of 80īs rock, 90īs house music, salsa, banda and the odd bit of thrash metal in a bar called Pata Negra in La Condesa. The beautiful people were out in force, but rubbish new rule means all bars and clubs in Mexico have to close by 3am. The only option therefore was to sit in a random Germanīs flat and drink beer until 7am before squeezing into a mini cooper and driving home. We were stopped by the police but amazingly let go, despite the fact the driver was foreign, drunk, had no insurance and there were 7 people in the car. Last week we were fined for not wearing seatbelts in the back- do you have to be Mexican to be eligible for police corruption or something?
