A word of warning to anyone going to Cholula, do NOT just get on any old bus marked "Cholula" when itīs pitch black outside! After an hour I was anxiously looking out the window for any signs of 365 church-based life and all I could see was fields. Asking the driver, I discovered weīd passed through Cholula about 20 minutes earlier (aha, so thatīs what that shantytown was) and were now on route to Brazil (probably). Good thing there were still buses going in the opposite direction. In daylight the town was much more aesthetically pleasing, although I do think that nobody here knows how to count...there were nowhere near as many as 365 churches. Bars, maybe...comforting to know students are the same the world over, the ones I stayed with seemed to spend more time smoking weed and watching the Simpsons than going to lectures. After an exhausting trek up the pyramid (actually a big grassy hill with a church at the top), I philosophically mused upon the legend of Quetzalcoatl- the bird god whom it was a shrine to and who the last Aztec Emperor mistook Cortes for, thus assuring the near total destruction of his people. Doh. Ok thatīs a lie, I actually collapsed in a sweaty panting heat. Must get into better shape if I plan on keeping this up.
