We finally left Sacramento and headed north toward the coast of California to see the redwood forests. They are certainly awesome trees, towering over 300 feet tall! (That's longer than a football field!) We enjoyed camping and hiking among the majestic redwoods in two very nice state parks---Humboldt Redwoods and Jedediah Smith.

Our stay at Jed Smith (near Crescent City, CA) unexpectedly stretched into four days. The first day we spent traveling in the car north into Oregon, stopping at a Welcome Center to load up on travel info galore. Also we enjoyed our first taste of coastal seafood while in Brookings Harbor.

The second day (Saturday) turned out NOT as expected, when we discovered that the "house" batteries in the RV had completely discharged by the evening. (The batteries were four years old and we probably should have had new ones before starting this trip, but. . . ) This meant that we could not pull in the 2 slideout rooms and move on until new batteries were installed. Of course things like this happen only on weekends, and it got down to 35 degrees that evening. With no hookups, we just had to get out the wool blankets and make the best of it.

Sunday morning we determined that we could drag out some of those tools we carry around, remove the batteries ourselves, take them into town, find new batteries, and install them. It took several hours of visiting various stores to find two matching deep-cycle batteries of the right size and type, but by late afternoon we had located one at an Ace Hardware and another at a True Value Hardware. Before long they were installed and working fine. We felt proud of ourselves AND saved quite a bit of money by not having a mechanic do the work. Of course, we have since found ways to spend that "saved" money!
