If someone ever asked me to define the word 'tough', my answer would be 'China'!  Everything about it is tough!  From the sheer number of people here, to not understanding the language (which is nothing new to me now, only this time people find my explanation of being a Brit unacceptable since I look 100% Chinese to them and speak native Cantonese, so after a lengthy discussion with a local Chinese friend I've come to the conclusion that telling people that I'm an Indo Chinese would be in my best interests), the inconveniences of not having facebook and youtube, to the high costs.  But the toughest 2 things for me is being stared and looked at in a disgusted way by the Chinese when they think I'm showing off for speaking in English, they don't even ask me if I'm from abroad they just make the assumption that I must be local and the other is people just not being able to accept that I'm a foreigner.

I have spent the last 2 days meeting my language partners and they have been so kind, sweet and generous!  They have all insisted on paying for my meals wich is very expensive by local standards and one even spent over 20 quid on me in one day, despite local salaries only being 200-300 quid per month, that's like 10% of his salary, so to say that I feel bad is an understatement.  One of them even insisted on coming with me to Yangshuo and I'm not certain if its because he likes me so much that he wants extra time with me, he chance to practise English with a native speaker is just too rare in China (esp as its free), he wants to go to the area or all three!  He asked me if he could come with me and how could I refuse him, since its a free country (and its his country), he can do whatever he likes!

12.06.2011- so it was that my language partner came with me to Yangshuo, which I regret as he brought me a load of healthy food and drinks at the bus station, which made me feel bad as I couldn't refuse them and I thought that he might fancy me and then my worst fears were confirmed when he asked me 'Liz, I want to discover you, what do you think?'.  I don't even know what he means by 'discover me', all I know is that I wanted to run away as fast as possible in that second!  I just hope that he's not expecting to hang around me 24/7 in Yangshuo or think that I'm his gf!
