So my last comment came to bite me on the ass!!! We left keystone in a massive snowstorm and were only very lucky thanks to St Christopher, Spud pulling every single bit of his comprehensive driving skills out and the good grace of about of 1000 drivers behind us as we took over 4 lanes going sideways to get over the last 500 meters of the pass before you drop into Denver! The single scariest 3 hours of my life. Yes there were tears! Then we battled the wind through the north of Colorado and into Nebraska. We settled on Lincoln for the night as Spud had had enough ear bashing, even though I thought he did a great job, my fears don't really portray it that way to him.
Then onto Chicago and on the 8 hour trip we counted 121 crashes and that was from about 2 hours in and probably over 30 crashes before that. The massive storm from Colorado had made a mark on Nebraska and Iowa too. We made it to Chicago and entered the city at 5 o'clock rush hour, guess where we were staying, oh that's right downtown Chicago!!! All worked out well and made it to accommodation by 6.30pm, where we parked the car and didn't touch it for two days - much to spuds relief.
We took the girls to Navy Pier and the very cool children's museum, then up the John Hancock Building for 360 degree views of Chicago. 97 floors high and a 40 sec elevator ride, yes there were tears again. The kids had a great time at the childrens museum and so did spud...although the waking up the teddy bear invention left alot to be desired, with spud and cam killing the bear as a wake up call. The magnificant mile was magnificant apart from the fact that i have no money to spend on all the magnificant stuff!
We had great meals out, one night at the Grand Luxe Café a huge restaurant with a great wine list and amazing food, then the next night at Pizzeria Uno (where the deep dish pizza originated in 1943). Spud and I also managed to spend a couple of hours at Blue Chicago, a live blues club that was showcasing an amazing blues band. It was heaven.
And after our few days in Chicago we packed up our ski gear, sent it to Te Anau and hit the road again.
