We had visions of pristine laid back Thai beach wonderness. It hasn't worked out that way. Koh Tao is grossly over developed, there's not a single shred of west facing beach front that isn't grinding under jerry-built accommodation or restaurants. The beach is still nice but this place is a bit too busy. Full of scuba divers as well, nothing worse. What is it about people who pay lots of money to learn to sink that makes them think they're so great? Box checkers of the highest order, and I've done the PADI courses too.

Anyway, we've decided to move on. Koh Tao is not completely without its charms, its southern facing beaches are very pretty but the rest is horribly over-developed. As for the prices, well, they're practically western, which for Thailand is a sin. The accommodation is poor to modest yet twice the price of anything else we've seen so far. We reckon it's best to move on and avoid the box checkers.
