The Grand Palace was the former residence of the king, built in 1782 by King Rama I. 218,000 square meters of throne halls, temples, residences, and administrative offices comprise the site. It has the feel of a giant treasure chest. Everything is adorned with gold, glitter, and colorful tiles. The colors are amazing. It may be gaudy by American standards, but it is still impressive. And honestly, it's pretty monetarily efficient. All of the shimmering colors are just colored mirrors...glass. So it's a lot of detailed work, but probably less expensive than marble or precious stone. The buildings were so closely spaced that it was difficult to photograph, but it was incredible to see. The Grand Palace may rival the churches of Italy, and I didn't think anything could achieve that feat!
