It all started this morning when the Chata couldn't get the credit card machine to work to pay for my room. After half an hour they got it sorted, but I missed the last cable car down to Stary Smokovec. Now they had started repairs that would take 1-3 hours. So me, my pack and my very sunburnt shoulder (luckily it was only the one shoulder!) started the trek down the mountain to Stary Smokovec.
Half an hour later and I was in Stary Smokovec. Grabbed a hotdog for a quick and nutritious breakfast and then caught the train to Poprad to wait for the train to Bratislava. Everything seemed to be going more smoothly once I was on the train to Bratislava. Until the train stopped and didn't move for almost an hour. A lady came around and said something, too bad I didn't understand Slovakian. Another girl in my cabin disappeared and I could see her going in and out of all the other cabins. She came back with a cute guy who spoke English to translate the lady's message.
Accident on the tracks ahead and it would be at least another hour before we move again. He and his friends, along with 3/4 of the train, were walking into the nearest town. I grabbed my pack and me and my sunburnt shoulder set off in the boiling sun for another unplanned trek. Silver lining, the unexpected walk evened out my sunburnt face from yesterday! We arrived at the bus station, along with most of the train, and tried to catch a bus to Bratislava. Since the parking lot that operates as a bus station was absolutely packed, me and my new buddies decided to grab a quick pint (after that walk we deserved it!) and wait for the next bus. When the next bus came, they let everyone going all the way to Bratislava on first, then they called out each town along the way. I guess the idea was this way the aisle would clear out first and no one would have to try to make it past the 50 people standing in it to get off the bus. My new buddy made sure I was on the bus and then waited for his town to be called.
Once in Bratislava, I arrived at the hostel just as everyone in my room was looking to head out for dinner. We went to a pub style restaurant and then in search of a free table outside somewhere. Didn't find that, but we did find an Irish pub complete with some Irish men! Stayed there until it shut and then went in search of a club. On the way we stopped to dip our legs in the town fountain and have a little dance in the street since some random guy was out singing opera. We found a club on a boat and stayed there until it shut.
By this time it was starting to get light out so we climbed the hill to the castle to watch the sunrise. A quick photo saluting with the security guards at the castle and it was time to search out a snack. Then it was back to the hostel.
Minor mishap when we got back to the hostel and someone was already asleep in my bunk. It turns out that the hostel sometimes forgets to clean all the beds in a room so when someone arrived late, my bed was the only one left that was clean. The hostel was next to no help, but I finally got another bunk sorted and then it was time for some sleep!
