We arrived in San Juan at about 1:30am, but coming from Seattle--four hours time difference--we weren't all that tired. Our room has a great view of the crescent beach out to the east and of the airport to the south.

The next morning we headed into old San Juan, the walled Spanish colonial era section of the city. Old San Juan is a triangular peninsula with a long straight northern coast guarded by El Morro and Fuerte San Cristobal, which were erected to protect against other European powers and marauding pirates who were after gold. The forts were also fired upon by the U.S. in the Spanish American war and were employed by the U.S. in World War II to scan the seas for German ships.
