From Arenal, our plan was to take a bus back into San Jose and immediately catch one back out to the coast at Tamarindo. Fate had a longer stay in mind.

Instead, we spent a couple of extra days in San Jose as I did my best to reconstruct the contents of my backpack after it, and everything in it, were stolen from the bus we were on. Replacing my passport and underwear and cash were easy. The toughest pill to swallow was losing a journal I had been keeping for almost a year. The silver lining was becoming a more efficient traveler. I purchased an old corn sack and used it as a backpack, filled it with a few of the necessary amenities (t-shirts, undies, a pair of pants, toothbrush and toothpaste, and a pad and pencil), and off we went.

Once that was all taken care of, Alex and I headed out to Tamarindo. For the rookie surfer, this was a much kinder beach. The break was longer, the waves were smaller, and the sand felt softer when you nosedived into it.

We were also given an incredible, spontaneous send-off party as we left town. Three Romans, who were just beginning their month long vacation, rolled into town and rented the room we had been occupying. Since our bus was leaving in the late afternoon, we had some time to kill. (Incidentally, at this point I had taken a commanding lead in the ongoing cribbage tournament.) The three Italian guys cooked up the most incredible spaghetti bolognese that I have ever had. They even brought their own olive oil from home.

From Tamarindo we headed off to Nica.
