Today I woke up sick and stayed at the cabin while Larry and Derek went to Clingman's Dome.  I spent the day in solitude and finished reading "The Help."  Excellent book, I highly recommend it.  Larry and Derek left shortly after 9:00 and it took them about an hour to get to Clingman's Dome.  They got one of the last parking spots in the parking lot.  They hiked to the top of Clingman's Dome.  Derek had not been there since he was a small boy and he had been a little afraid of the height.  He said he remembered it as being about 100' high but it is only about half that.  He had been a little scared of it as a kid.  It was a very clear day and they could see all the way back to where we are staying.  There is a church on a hill near here with a really tall cross and they could see that without binoculars from the top.  There were no leaves on the trees as it is at a higher elevation.  The colors march down the mountains as they change at the top first and the bottom last.

Then they went back to the car, got out their chairs and their lunch.  They had a great view for lunch too.  Then they hiked out to Andrew's Bald about 2 miles down the mountain.  About half way there they saw a bear in a tree eating berries.  The watched it for about 15-20 minutes and then continued down the path.     They watched him again for a short time and then continued on.  When they got to Andrew's Bald they took pictures and sat on a rock to rest for the hike back up to the parking lot.  On the way up the trail at about the same place they saw the bear cross in front of them about 30 feet ahead.  This time he tore into a nearby log looking for grubs and other insects.  They watched him until he wandered off into the woods and they couldn't see him any more.  They left about 3:30.

On the way back they called me to say they were on the way and did I want anything.  I had them get me some Kaopektate.  They also got kleenex and some more beer.  They got here about 5:30.  We had steaks cooked on the grill and sweet potato fries and salad.  The sweet potatoes were from Derek's garden.  After supper Larry did the dishes while Derek and I watched "Pickers."  When Larry was finished we watched "The Greatest Story Ever Sold" by Morgan Spurlock who did "Super Size Me."  It was about product placement in movies and documentaries.  Then we went to bed.
