We were up and packed and ready to move by 9:30, so off we went to head south and east to Akialoa Cottage in Kekaha.  We have been on the windward side of the island for the first week.  In addition to being windy, it is also wetter than the leeward side where we are headed.  The leeward side is dryer, hotter and sunnier.  We drove until we got to Hanapepe where we got gas.  When we got to Waimea (why-MAY-ya) we turned off at Waimea Canyon Drive and headed up, up and up.  The first part of the canyon was more like a broad valley with Waimea River winding through it.  We stopped at several lookouts.  There were elevation signs for every 500' of gain.

Before long we joined Koke'e Road and were soon in Waimea Canyon State Park.  One of our stops was a little falls through red rock.  We pulled over and parked at the Waimea Canyon Lookout.  There was a large parking lot that even had buses.  This overlook gave us the best view of the deep narrow part of the canyon.  We spent quite a while there just taking in the gorgeous view and trying to capture it in a picture, not possible.  Shortly after the Lookout we stopped at Pu'u Ka Pele Picnic Area for lunch.  We waited a few minutes for a table and then had our sandwiches and chips.  Across the road was a lookout where you could see Waipo'o Falls down in the canyon.  Our next stop was Pu'u Hinahina Lookout where we could see the Canyon Trail to Waipo'o Falls we will hike later in the week.

Then the road took us into Koke'e State Park.  Our first stop was Kalalau Lookout where we were in the clouds so there was no view, in fact is was misting on us.  We went to the end of the road to where the Pihea Trail to the Alaka'i Swamp.  This is another hike we want to take this week.  It is four miles out and four miles back, so that will be a long day.  At the last parking lot we were at over 4000' and the temperature had dropped from 84* to 60*.   On the way back down we stopped at the Koke'e Museum and looked at the exhibits on birds, plants, weather, and the Iniki Hurricane that devastated Kauai with $2 billion in damages in 1992.  I bought a stuffed Nene to add to my collection.  We drove all the way back to Waimea without stopping.  It was hot when we got out of the car.  We couldn't check in until 4:00, so we went to the Big Save Grocery for  sliced cheese and Aloha Soda.  We stopped at the square to see the statue of Captain Cook.  Then we went to a couple of shops where Derek got souvenirs and I got a beach coverup with turtles on it.

Then we headed for Kekaha but it was too soon and they were still cleaning the cottage.  So we drove the rest of the paved road out to the turn off for Polihhale State Park which is down a deeply rutted gravel road.  On the way back we stopped at Sand Kawai'ele Sand Mine Bird Sanctuary where we saw Black-necked stilts, moorhens, and new one for our list the Black-crowned Night Heron.  When we got back it was after 4:00 but she still wasn't finished cleaning.  So we went and parked by the beach and Larry, Derek, and Erin got out and went to the beach.  I stayed in the shade in the car.  We went back to the cottage but she still wasn't done so we parked just across from the road and waited.  She didn't leave the cottage until 4:40.

We parked in the driveway and unloaded.  There are three bedrooms here so Derek and Erin each got their own and Larry and I are together.  This place is not as nice as the condo but it is big, has its own pool, and we can see the ocean from the front window.  We weren't ready for supper yet, so we relaxed for a little while.  Erin went to the beach.  We had bratwurst and spaetzle (German noodles with onions, swiss cheese and butter), and sauerkraut.  Larry cooked the bratwurst on the grill by the pool and we ate at the table by the pool.  When we came in it was after 8:00 and pretty dark.  We saw these bugs flying around a streetlight at the beach.  They seemed to glow but it was just the light reflecting off of them.  We did the dishes and blogged etc. until it was time for bed.
