August 30, 2010 Monday: The Wheel, Boating on the Thames, Windsor Castle

Before I got up for the morning, I looked at all my pictures.  Then I had a shower and breakfast.  Rita and I went to Tesco's for groceries.  I bought more Jelly Babies and McVitie’s Digestive Biscuits.  When we got back Josie had called to volunteer to drive us to Windsor because it would be hard to find parking  today which is a Bank Holiday.  So Josie drove us to Windsor Castle and showed us where things are.  The first thing we did was ride the Wheel, a large enclosed ferris wheel.  From the Wheel we had a good  view of Windsor Castle, the Thames River, and Eton College.

Our boat ride on the Thames was relaxing and informative.  I took lots of pictures.  The top of the boat was full so we had the bottom to ourselves for most of the trip.  We went under Brunel’s iron railway bridge erected in 1849.  We also went under the Queen Elizabeth’s bridge.  We went by the Royal Windsor Racecourse.  We went as far as the Boveney Lock and turned around to go back.  I saw grebes on the water as well as lots of swans, Canada geese, and mallards.  When we returned we went to the Royal Oak Pub for lunch.  I treated Rita and Tony.  We all had meat pies:  Rita = lamb pie, Tony = chicken and mushroom pie, me = beef and ale pie.  Then we walked up to the castle’s gate and went to some of the shops.  Rita bought some old fashioned candy.  I bought Walker shortbread cookies in a beefeater tin for my mom.

Josie picked us up and we went back to her house in Engelfield Green.  We had a cup of tea and cake.  Then we came back to Rita and Tony’s.  Rita and I went to Ursula’s to pick up the dog, Heidi.  I got to see the progress made in Ursula’s new extension.  The cupboards and countertops are in and the floor is laid.  Warren was working in the dining room and Ursula was putting together a buggy for the baby coming in two weeks.  On the way back we took Heidi for a walk in the local park.

When we returned, I started working on my blogs and am now finishing the last one.   Rita fixed a simple dinner for us of bread, cheese, veggies from the garden and fruit for dessert.  We watched TV as I finished my blogs.  It is almost 10:00 and I need to pack.
