Today, our last day here, we took the tram into Ponti Romani, the main town square again and explored further down some side streets. There is a big event going on right now in Padova, much of it focused on the University area. I'm not certain, but it looked much like a "hazing" ritual, with students having to perform certain things, while being pummeled with a variety of things, such as flour, eggs...forced to recite and read things off posters, and drinking heavily. Some of them were wearing silly costumes, while others were adorned with wreaths on their heads
Bo Palace, the University was founded in 1222. Gallileo was said to have lectured here. There is also a large Anato y Theter, and unfortunately, we missed the tour. The Cathedral of Padova, in the Piazza Del Duomo was built between 16th and 18th century and is adorned with beautiful statues, none of which we were able to photograph
We also happened upon this gorgeous building with very ornate Iron doors, not sure what it was. I managed to snap a pic of it before the guard yelled at me (oops, I do get into trouble on occasion, but its really not my fault!). Anyway, he did let us go inside and have a look, with the promise of ŅO FOTO, and discovered the place was a bank! Imagine where their service fees are going?. Beautiful frescoes, paintings, spectacular, carved ballustrades and woodwork everywhere. It must have been some kind of a historical building, but all we know for sure, it is a bank now! I've posted some random photos of our last day in town, with as much description on each photo as I could manage.
We have learned here kthat for us 8 days is too long to be in one place...we need to be more free to travel around the area. Our next trip will probably involve a car. I don't know whether we would rent an apartment agsin, unless we were very certain of what we are getting. This one was adequate, but "not exactly as illustraded" online. The facilities are ecclectic, and not particularly functional, at least y our standards. We have enjoed our time, here in Italia, and look forward to a few more little tastes of Italy in our upcoming cruise. U til then, we will spend a few days exploring Croatia. Arrivadeci!
