Better deals than Black Friday... More legal than the Black Market... It's the Black Friday Market in Cite ASECNA, Ouakam! Every Thursday night, trucks roll into the "soccer field" in my neighborhood to drop off market stands to be set up before the sun rises the next morning. In less than two hours on Friday morning, the barren field turns into a loud, busy, bustling Friday market. The Ouakam Friday market is known for having the best deals, mostly because it's all of the left-over merchandise that other markets don't want anymore. By left-overs, I mean that the item has most likely changed hands ten times before ending up in the Friday market.

Because the majority of the clothes comes from the United States, Rachel and I decided it would be a great place to have a shopping extravaganza for Black Friday. The other reason for choosing the Ouakam Friday market for our shopping endeavors is that we hardly have any money left after spending over three months here. We woke up extremely early by Senegalese standards (9am), and we were literally the first customers in the market. That definitely beats waiting outside the glass doors of a department store before the sun comes up with a crowd of present-hungry Christmas shoppers.

My clothes are less than desirable, so I decided I would look for some new t-shirts to wear for the last few weeks. I had no idea that I would have some really great finds! I came away from the Black Friday Market with a "vintage" Philadelphia Eagles shirt, a construction company t-shirt, some very interesting World Trade Center sandals to wear in the shower, and a few (very ugly) beaded necklaces. Don't worry, America, I'm bringing all of our country's donated clothes back home with me.
