I looked up the driving distance to Koke'e State Park and it said it would take about an hour to get there so I suggested we go and check it out--just a quick trip right? We left the house around 11 (I knew the likelihood of last 2 lookouts being clear wasn't too good leaving so late but I had no desire to set an alarm for this another day so decided to risk it). Well, it took more like 2 hours to make it all the way to last lookout. I don't know if I just drove too slow or if Google maps is crazy. Needless to say, we didn't see much and it was a disappointment after that longer-than-expected drive. I did enjoy the views of Waimea Canyon on the way back down and we stopped by a road side stream that was pretty but I'm not sure I would make the trip again unless I went early and planned to hike some of the trails
Back in Waimea, we were hungry and stopped at Island Taco. Granted, they were busy, but it had to have been the slowest service I've ever seen. It took 30 minutes for our tacos and woman didn't write down whose order was whose and kept bringing everyone the wrong food (I understand she was busy as she had to take orders and bring them out but a simple assigning of numbers to orders would have helped). On the bright side, they were really good tacos but, we were already a little cranky I think and the wait just made it worse. I picked up a shave ice at JoJo's Anuenue on the way out of town which was delicious. We headed back to Poipu in search of Kauai-made gifts. We stopped at the Hawaiian Trading Post in Lawai but didn't find anything we liked. They have nice grounds there though, with a fake volcano and a fake surfing wave. It seemed like a fun place.
Back in Koloa, we stopped at Koloa Fish Market and picked up some Ono for dinner. Then, we stopped by Spouting Horn before returning home. We had a late snorkel at Poipu beach and planned to watch the sunset from there. But, dunce that I am, I ran back to the house to grab something and then locked the keys in the house....well, it turned out I had just dropped the keys but we didn't discover that until after we'd already called the rental company to send someone over to let us in...by then we didn't feel like walking back down to the beach so just watched the sunset from the lanai and had our Ono for dinner--didn't like it as much as the Opah but I may have overcooked it a bit.
Not our best day on the island but, hey, we were still on vacation in Hawaii and that can't be bad. All's well that ends well.
