We took the train from Euston Station in London up to Liverpool. Approximately 2 hours, it was a great way to travel and enjoy the English countryside. Expectations for Liverpool where all based around the Beatles, however we found a vibrant city steeped in Georgian architecture and a dynamic arts scene.

Our first point of exploration was the Albert Dock along the Mersey River. Famous for its ship building past and trade, the wider river provides a marvelous backdrop to the city centre. The wind chill of the river was freezing and made a timely reminder that we aren't in Melbourne anymore. Such was the cold, Michelle had to invest in a scarf to protect her delicate neck.

The Beatles tour was akin to a trip to Mecca. Visiting the key places in their rise to fame: childhood homes, the church where Paul and John first met and played, landmarks that were to prove inspirational for many of their songs and of course the Cavern Club where they were first discovered. It would be fair to surmise that the city is very proud of the Beatles legacy as you can't walk anywhere without some type of reference. No doubt many retailers seek to take advantage of unsuspecting Beatles 'tourists' however it is very hard to avoid the many opportunities to explore their legacy.

Beatles aside, Liverpool was magnificent and only wished we had more time to explore this gem in the north.
