Most people go to Pismo Beach to enjoy the quaint little beach community and maybe pick up some clam chowder and saltwater taffy.

To Mike and I, Pismo Beach is a place to take a crap and eat. The coastline looks like much of the Southern California coast so there's really nothing to gawk about. What does make some noise is the clam chowder.

Every time we visit Pismo, we stop at Splash Cafe, a little restaurant on the main strip near the Pismo pier. The clam chowder here is second to none - much better than the chowder we had in Monterey.

The first difference is the toasted bread bowls. It's amazing how a little crunch in the bread can make something so much better. Also, the soup is creamier and the fish is more fresh. Bread bowls here are less than $5. A line always stretches out of the cafe, but the service is quick and friendly.

The other good part of Splash Cafe is their bathrooms. I've washed my face and dropped deuces in there many times. It's a comfortable little bathroom with strange scrawls and pictures on the wall.

If you want to get a sugar high, go to the California Coast Candy Company a few blocks from the pier. The saltwater taffy there is the best and there's also sugar-packed fudge brownies that will make your eyes pop out of the sockets.

We spent an hour in town before hitting the road again. There was much to do before getting back to OC.
