I packed my slippers. Required footwear for living indoors. The only trouble is I didn't consider that I'm used to cooler buildings; the sorts of places that have cold floors, with heat close to the fire, but usually cold air around the feet. Or an unheated van. My problem is that I have warm slippers. In an already hot flat, this has required some rethinking.

I went out to buy something cooler for my feet. I ran into two problems straight away. The shops are now stocking winter lines and furry boots are not the solution. Secondly, this is Chelsea and slippers should never have the same value as the debt of a third world nation.

Further afield near Earls Court, I found a shop that sold mobile phone accessories and suitcases. Obviously they also sold hideous flip flops and I bought the most disgusting plastic fake leather, tan and silver monstrosities I'd ever hope to own. They are fabulous! Instant comfort.

But now I have another quandary. Are my feet pretty enough? Hairy toes are a sign of intelligence they say. With the excessive attention to appearance and overpriced "essentials" in this neighbourhood, I thought I'd found a gap in the market to make my fortune. Someone has beaten me to it. Makeup for feet has already been invented. I can't believe I hadn't already got some.
