Having time to ourselves was one of the hopes for our travelling amongst the usual things of seeing places, meeting people and experiencing new things. Laura had a romantic notion of breaking down somewhere and having an enforced stop where we would settle into the local community whilst the friendly local mechanic set about fixing our LDV. However, breaking down in Norfolk and staying at my mum's house, in wet November wasn’t quite the idea.  Instead of waking up, opening the van doors and drinking in the warmth of the mediterranean, carving a loo roll holder or child’s mobile from driftwood collected on a morning walk, playing some guitar etc. we’re stranded with one change of clothes each and without those few things that we’d selected as our most important hobby items. Unfortunately, strolls in the Norfolk countryside would be a fight to stay upright whislt being soaked to the skin by the current weather conditions so we’re stuck indoors.  And mum does not have a tv.

So how have we responded to the breakdown in a village scenario?  I can report that we haven’t ensconced ourselves in a local fiesta nor picked olives for an old couple. We have though tidied up most of the loose ends and put the last few items in the loft for storage but then what?  Mum did not need any shelves in the garage but I had some wood and angle brackets so I put them up. Hoovered and fitted an iron holder. I’ve made myself "useful", a little. We’ve also practised playing computer games to impress friends with high scores and spent far too long on Facebook. Laura has written some notes for one of her stories and declared that she must get out of her pyjamas before she starts on the vodka. I am pleased to note that it is nearly 5pm and she is still in bed clothes rather than swilling her mouth out with booze first thing in the morning!
