I will sum it up (will offer more detail in the next post) by saying that while the transit itself was exhausting, frustrating and complicated in ways that I had never experienced, the country (from what I saw) was yet another unexpected and beautiful surprise!
After a seemingly endless 24 hours, I finally landed in Guatemala City and since I had no bag, and had already had to cancel the mornings' press event and was due to make my first presentation in two hours, we headed straight to the mall
I got lucky and did manage to find something to wear that I, and many of the wonderful people I met there, jokingly call 'my Guatemala dress.'
I LOVE bringing locally crafted or signature items (and of course, a shot glass to add to my brother's collection) back for my family, but I am not really a 'collector' or a big souvenir person myself. Clothes are definitely NOT among the list of things I would bring home because let's be real, when would I wear an abaya or kimono or local Guatemalan dress? And where will I store it in my cute, but little city apartment? I haven't quite figured out a specific thing to collect, but if I look at the things I have brought back home over the years, the theme is the same: each has a story, and while my dress is not the 'typical' souvenir, it is the most perfect keepsake for this trip. It has its own special story AND I will definitely be wearing it again.
