Up early again today for the long drive to Carbondale, Colorado.  We took Highway 285 north through Santa Fe, and up to Route 82 for the exciting trek through Independence Pass and on to Aspen. We enjoyed the wonderful scenery as we moved through northern New Mexico and into Colorado. We saw some elk, and the mountains off in the distance were beautiful throughout the trip.

As we started up Route 82 towards the pass, the girls were a bit anxious at the idea of climbing to 12,000 feet. Their nerves grew as we started the steep ascent through hairpin turns and winding narrow roads. I convinced them to chill and that we would make it alive, and by the time we hit the top and could get out and walk around, they were enjoying themselves. At the top the air was noticeably thinner, and the temperature had dropped to 56 degrees. A far cry from yesterday in NM when it was near 100! The views were breathtaking from the top, and we managed to take some pictures before we got too cold.

After we made it down the pass we drove through Aspen on the way to Carbondale. It's a pretty town, and the ski mountains look great. We'll have to think about a winter trip here someday. My cousin Carl, his wife Wendy and their daughter Hannah live in a beautiful home with 36 acres, horses, goats, rabbits, cats and a dog. Gabi and Bri had fun with the animals and were able to go on a ride around with Carl as he worked his plow horses before we settled in for the night.

Tomorrow I'm having the car serviced and the girls will sleep in again before another activity-filled day.
