Flag of Austria  , Austrian Alps,
Monday, June 27, 2011

We finally left Munich to head down to Italy. The bus ride was seven hours but we had a few rest stops and a longer stopover in Innsbruck, Austria the site of two Winter Olympics. The town is nestled right near the Alps which makes for absolutely stunning scenery. One of the main sights there is the Golden Roof. The Golden Roof is the three-story balcony on this house at the heart of Innsbruck´s Old Town. The late Gothic oriels are capped with gold-plated copper tiles and was constructed for Emperor Maximilian I to serve as a royal box where he could sit in luxury and enjoy tournaments in the square below. Completed in the 16th century, the Golden Roof was built in honor of Maximilian´s second marriage, to Bianca Maria Sforza of Milan.

We payed a few euro to climb to the top of a church in the center of town so we could see the amazing views from higher up. It was worth every penny and we could see the surrounding areas for miles. I wish we had more time to hike the area, I do not see this type of scenery in California. On a funny note, from our high vantage point we saw an older couple eating breakfast in their undies on a terrace.

We were only in Innsbruck for a couple hours then we continued on our way through the Alps into Italy an towards Venice. The town we stayed in was a 30 minute ferry ride from Venice and along the coast of the Adriatic Sea. It was named Jesolo. Our hotel was interesting, with the toilet literally in the shower. I think I almost cried from laughing when I saw it the first time. Aside from being cramped our hotel was luckily right near the beach so we went swimming in the Adriatic Sea once we got off the bus, jumping off one of the several small piers in the area. The water was fairly clear, shallow and refreshing. It was a great time and a nice relief after the long 7 hour bus ride. We completed the night with dinner at a local Italian restaurant where we ate and sipped wine while listening to an elderly gentlemen exercise his skills on the piano.
