Flag of Bolivia  ,
Tuesday, July 5, 2005

Now, Ive not actually been to Andalucia in Spain, but Ive heard its a nice place and therefore on reading that Tarija is the "Andalucia of Bolivia", I thought it would be a nice place to go. That and its the only place in Bolivia where they make wine.

Unfortunately, Tarija is a bit of a hole and although it does have a few nice plazas, the rest is a bit crappy. And I can only imagine what problems the locals must have with their bowels as there are more shops selling toilet paper than I have ever seen in my life. Stacked high in the shops themselves and spilling out onto the street.

There is not a huge amount to do there either and so I was forced to go on a winery tour. On the way we stopped off to go fossil hunting and actually came across quite a few large old bones and such like, just lying around or buried shallowly (is that a word?) in the dirt. The vineyard tours were interesting enough but a little short on tastings to be truly excellent. One seemed to make nothing but thick, sweet, syrupy wines (both red and white), which are apparently very popular there. Hmmm.

It was whilst I was in Tarija that the (1st) London bombings happened - Im glad youre all ok. It was very strange watching London on CNN all day and I actually felt slightly homesick. Dont worry though, the thought of actually coming home stopped all of those crazy thoughts!
