Got up at 12:37 p.m. aboard Norwegian Epic. I'm 0 for 5 so far on getting up in time for breakfast (which ends at 10:30 a.m.). To date my earliest wake-up was at 11:48. The first couple days I chalked up the major sleeping in to catching up on sleep after 3.5 weeks of touring the Balkans and Berlin. But now I'm afraid I'm sick. :-(
Today is our first of five sea days en route from Ponta Delgada, Azores, to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. I'm feeling ill - runny nose, coughing, itchy eyes, stuffy head. I think I've caught a cold. I've felt really low on energy today; just all-around crummy. Bummer.
I went downstairs at 1 p.m. to write yesterday's blog entry, then headed upstairs to my cabin to get some DayQuil cold medication before eating lunch at the buffet at 2:24.
The weather was pretty nice outside today, so I did my first outdoor reading of the cruise in the quiet area on Deck 18 forward. It's still too cool to swim in the pool or go down the waterslides - I'm eagerly awaiting warmer temperatures as we sail south toward the Caribbean. But I was able to read outside this afternoon wearing shorts and a T-shirt; and for half an hour or so the sun was strong enough to shed the shirt. The second half of this cruise will be really nice when I can take full advantage of being outside.
Headed to the gym at 6:37 for 45 minutes on the treadmill (3.81 miles). Showered, then met Craig, Ian, and others at Shakers bar at 8:00 followed by dinner in the Manhattan dining room. There was a 30-minute wait for a table. Not feeling great, I went up to wait in my cabin rather than at the bar. I did not feel like standing around waiting. I got some things organized in my cabin and read tomorrow's Freestyle Daily newsletter, then returned to the dining room just as the group was being seated.
I ate a light dinner tonight after last night's feast of meat at the Brazilian restaurant. Tonight I had a chicken sesame Asian salad followed by grilled salmon with spinach and roasted potatoes. For dessert, I had a bowl of pineapple sherbet. We were the last table to finish dinner in the Manhattan dining room tonight.
Returned to my cabin at 11:14. It's now 11:38. Our position is 34º 29.50' N, 35º 28.02' W.
The cold medication seems to have stopped my runny nose, but my head still feels congested and I am tired despite the fact I've only been awake for 11 hours. Ugh. I hope this cold doesn't cripple the rest of my cruise vacation.
