1/10/10
We started the day by traveling to Dauphin Island, which is located in Mobile Bay. It has been chilly down here, but the walk around the beach was still pleasant. We collected sea shells and observed the local sea birds. At dusk, we had a beer at a local bar on the water. Every body was very kind their, and everybody knew each other by name. After our beer, we headed for New Orleans. We arrived around 9:00PM and struggled with parking. The street signs are very confusing... We also did not know if we were in a good or bad part of town mostly because it was dark. Rachel and I purchased a small meal at a restaurant, then walked to our new shelter. We were greeting by yet another kind and welcoming Couch Surfing host named Denis. His home is like a small palace, which sits conveniently on the corner of the French Quarters. He shares a beautiful communal courtyard with large palm trees and a swimming pool. Rachel and I are extremely excited to start our exploration tomorrow!

Today, Rachel and I explored the French Quarter. It is filled with beautiful buildings with French and Spanish influences. The good thing about traveling right now (in January) is that tourist crowds are minimal. Rachel and I can explore just about anything with little/no effort. At night, Rachel and I walked down Frenchman street. We stumbled on a quant jazz bar called d.b.a. The music was incredible. The lead singer crowd surfed, played the trombone while standing on the bar, and basically went crazy. We were their for almost 5 hours which flew by in a flash.

Rachel and I rode our bikes to and around the 9th Ward to observe the destruction. To our surprise, most of it appears to be rebuilt. I estimate that only %10-%15 of the homes are still in ruin. The temperature was about 54 degrees and sunny. :

1/13/10
Today, Rachel and I drove to the Jean Lafitte National Park where we walked through the swamps on a boardwalk. It was very beautiful. The moss covered trees are somewhat prehistoric looking. Unfortunately, we did not see any alligators :(, but the walk was still very enjoyable.

1/14/10
Rachel and I spent the day relaxing in a semi-abandoned park. It was 60 degrees and sunny. Tonight will be our last night in New Orleans. We are planning on seeing a jazz band that our host, Dennis, recommended. Tomorrow, we leave for Austin...
