After Matamata we drove on back roads to Waitomo Caves for our abseiling adventure into the famous caves. We opted for St. Benedict's Cavern as it's supposedly the most picturesque of all the caves in Waitomo with ornate stalactite and stalactmite formations.
After abseiling 60 metres into the caves we explored them for about 2 hours before zipping over ancient stalacmites on a flying fox....in the pitch black. Everyone turned off their head torches while we took it in turns to "fly" over the formations to the other side near our exit. Scary but fun!
On the way to the exit the caves were covered with wetas - huge grasshopper-like insects that are native to New Zealand. We then went back to Waitomo Caves after a long day, cooked up a great bbq before conking out! We're off to New Plymouth next.....taking the scenic route!
